The Fresh Air Album Show is hosted by current Head of Off-Air Fin (Finlay Niven) and formerly by 2011-12 Fresh Air station manager JP (Jon Parker). The show fast became somewhat of a Fresh Air cult phenomenon due to its original format where a new guest or guests played tracks from their favourite album each week and discussed their reasons for choosing it. It is the ambitious jingles and recurring features, however, which the show is most famous for.

Currently, the show is celebrating 20 years of Fresh Air and the Mercury Music Prize by searching for the Greatest Mercury Prize winning album of all time, where one album is voted out of the competition each week.

The show has had it's fair share of controversy over the years, most notably in November 2011 when the outcome of that week's "Greatest Albums" vote was reversed due to a voting system mishap. The global reaction to the news can be heard here.

JP left the show in a blaze of glory and self-indulgence in February 2012 and since then Finlay has co-hosted with a guest presenter each week.

The future of the Album Show after #AlbumShow50 is unknown beyond it being Finlay's last show as presenter and that Elyse will take over from Episode 51 in October 2012 (the 3rd anniversary of the show) after a short break.

It is also expected that there will be a mini series during the Fresh Fringe broadcast in 2012 in which Fringe performers are interviewed about their favorite albums.

Philosophy

A small sect, or indeed cult, have emerged from the popularity of the album show; in 2011 one of its disciples tweeted the show in response to the questions "what is the meaning of life?" and "what is the best religion?" giving the same answer (coming from @theHitch on Twitter): "#AlbumShow".

Friends of the Show

The Album Show would be nothing if it weren't for it's guests. There comes a time though when a guest is honoured for Services toh The Album Show. There are currently four guests who have earned this honour and been given the title of 'Friend of the Show' an optional title that can be used before ones name, e.g. Friend of the Show Emma Segal.

Features

Famous features include the current 2011-12 feature Greatest Albums and classics such as InternationAlbum, PhenomenAlbum, Album Show ABC and the annual Album of the Year/Decade.

Jingles

The show is known for it's elaborate and unique use of overly-dramatic jingles. For the Greatest Albums feature, the show introduced no less than FOUR new "Greatest Albums" epic jingles, which can be heard here, here, here, and here.
The episode after the 2011 Album Show Voting Scandal had a dramatic introduction referencing the controversial events of the previous week, which can be heard here The Album Show first became synonymous with such jingles in early 2010, when Chris Imlach filled in for Fin one week and JP had the entire Fresh Air committee contribute to an epic jingle for him. It can be found here. The intro jingle to the last show of series 2, where JP and Fin were guests on their own show, was another historic Fresh Air classic, and can be heard here

Album Show Dinner Parties

Fans of the show are sometimes invited to glamorous Album Show Dinner Parties, where gorgeous food is consumed, expensive alcohol is drunk and games such as "Kanye or Finlay" are played, where the guests have to guess if a lyric is rapped by Kanye West or Finlay Niven.

Album Show T-shirts

New for Autumn 2010 were the beautiful bejazzled Album Show t-shirts. JP's is blue whilst Fin's is green, and their names are bejeweled on the back.

Season 1

Sundays at 12pm

Episode 1

1st November 2009 Emma Segal brought Arcade Fire's Neon Bible in as the first ever album to be showcased on the Album Show.

Episode 2

8th November 2009 Dan Moss played Kano's London Town - which can be heard here. Tim Burke played Blur's Blur - which can be heard here, which JP pointed out came out 127 months to the day before Dan's chosen album. This was a fascinating fact but was not labelled as a "Fresh Air Fresh Fact" as this concept had not yet been born. Those wonderful days were very much still to come, when we would all relish the prospect of being hit in the face by a truck full of facts.

Episode 3

15th November 2009 Paul Murray played a blinder and laid down Fleetwood Mac's Rumours. Paul's knowledge of this album was incredible, making this truly a show to remember. Will Clunas had the unenviable task of following up "Rumours" but did so nobly with his choice of "Danse Macabre" by The Faint.

Episode 4

22nd November 2009 Chris Imlach brought in Pulp's "Different Class" whilst Charlie McDonagh brought in NoFX's "The War on Errorism", featuring the politically incorrect "She's Nubs" which provided the biggest laugh of the series so far.

Episode 5

29th November 2009 Caroline Robertson brought hip-hop to the Album Show in the form of Kanye West's "College Dropout" whilst future-manager Richard Vause played his favourite album "Colour and the Shape" by Foo Fighters. He famously said "I didn't really like music before this album".

The Album Show is good for you according to leading Doctors

Episode 6

6th December 2009 After building up to it all season, the Album of the Decade finally happened after much speculation over who would make the top ten list. The final version of the list was famously compiled the night before at the Fresh Air Awards on a napkin known as "Google Napkins". Emma Segal came back on to bookend the semester and the show was deemed a huge success. Arctic Monkeys scooped the crown of Album of the Decade. The full results are listed below.

Albums of the Decade rankings
#10 The White Stripes - Elephant (2003)
#9 Klaxons - Myths of the Near Future (2007)

Season 2

Sundays at 12pm

Episode 1

14th February 2010 Richard Hanrahan and Katy Hetherington got 2010 started with their albums. Hanrahan's was famously the first compilation album to be featured on the show. This show saw the start of the "Album Show ABC feature" where JP had to choose an album beginning with A and Fin chose one beginning with B. The listeners were able to vote for their favourite and a winner was declared at the end of the show.

Episode 2

21st February 2010 Emma Segal and Tim Burke returned to the show and Tim this time chose Joy Division.

Every Album Show is unique and brilliant in its own way

Episode 3

28th February 2010 The week preceding this edition of the Album Show saw a flurry of activity resulting in a jingle that will go down in Fresh Air history. Fin was away this week to work on his dissertation so Chrimlach (Chris Imlach) - a mega fan of the show who would email in several times during every show - was chosen as guest host. Little to his knowledge, however, JP had got most of the Fresh Air committee to record pieces for one of the most dramatic Fresh Air jingles ever to open the show with. It can be found here

Episode 4

7th March 2010 Chris Madden and Simon Vansintjan made it a bit of a lad-fest and there was a ridiculous quiz this week.

Episode 5

14th March 2010 Ellie Robert brought on "More Specials" by The Specials and Ellie and JP went on to do the first ever hour of "JP and Ellie unplanned" immediately afterwards.

Episode 6

21st March 2010 In a mega end-of-season special, JP and Fin were guests on their own show whilst Emma Segal and Chris Imlach hosted. JP and Fin played their favourite albums, OVO (The Millennium Show) by Peter Gabriel, and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars by David Bowie, respectively. The intro jingle was another historic Fresh Air classic, and can be heard here

Season 3

Sundays at 12pm - Spring Specials

Episode 1

2nd May 2010 ELECTION SPECIAL JP was away but Ellie Robert, Chris Madden and Angus Niven came in to interview MPs hoping to be elected in that week's 2010 UK General Election. An MP from the Conservative, Labour, and Liberal Democrat parties were interviewed and had a track played from their favourite albums. The Green party and Scottish National Party MPs were not available. To make up for this Fin famously played "I'm On My Way" by the Proclaimers, as it was Scottish, and it was featured on Shrek who is green.

Episode 2

9th May 2010 ABC SPECIAL Emma Segal returned as the boys finished off their three-month-long 'ABC' feature by fighting it out round for round, letter for letter with an album for every letter of the alphabet remaining in the feature.

Episode 3

16th May 2010 LIVE MUSIC SPECIAL Fin was away so Chrimlach came back to play some of the best live album tracks.

Off-season Specials 2010

Summer Podcast

4th June 2010 As they were away for the summer, JP and Fin made a podcast which would go down in history as being the most sound-effect heavy Album Show ever. JP and Fin created the illusion of being at the cricket, on the beach (where the famous "I got 99 problems" joke was made), at a jingle cave (home of the elusive Chrimlach bird) where all the Album Show jingles are stored, in a tent during a rainstorm and Fin pushing JP in a lake because he had used too many sound effects. For their summer albums, JP chose New Pornographers whilst Fin chose Meursault.

Season 4

Sundays at 12pm

A dramatic video trailer for season four can be seen here

Episode 1

31st October 2010 Ellie Robert and Emma Rae guested whilst JP was away. In his absence though, Fin played clips of JP pretending to be Halloween versions of well known farmyard animals, as well as the infamous "Horror Movie Quoting Chicken". Emma also discussed the time she met Craig David on a boat and brought his album on.

Episode 2

7th November 2010 Tom McGuinness and Harriet Quiney were guests as this week Fin was away. The hilarious "How Happy is Happy" feature took place, as Harriet's nickname is Happy.

Episode 3

21st November 2010 After the previous week's show had been cancelled, this was something of a reunion. Ursula Gore recorded a spectacular poem written by JP as an intro jingle for the show, which can be heard here. The show itself can be heard here

Episode 4

30th November 2010 This week the show was a podcast special, showcasing many of the albums in contention for the Album Show Album of the Year. The show can be heard here

Episode 5

17th December 2010 The highly anticipated Album of the Year podcast was released barely a week before christmas, with a shock win for Best Coast, beating hotly-tipped Kanye West in one of the most controversial Album Show decisions ever. In a second controversy, Bruce Springsteen's unreleased album from the 1970s was number four on the list, as it was released in 2010 despite being recorded in the seventies. The show can be heard here.

Episode 6

17th March 2011 A Fresh Air Media Ball special, where we gave away tickets to the Ball itself. The show can be heard here

Episode 7: #ALBUMSHOW30

24th March 2011 The big one. #ALBUMSHOW30 (listen here) was an incredible show for these thirty epic reasons. The intro jingle which was published the week before can be found here and the advert, dubbed "the most hilarious radio advert ever" by Simon Vansintjan, can be found here.

30 reasons #albumshow30 rocked

  1. The most packed studio ever – JP & Fin were joined by their best guests from the last eighteen months: Ellie, Max Reinhardt, JY, Christian, Simon and of course Richard Vause and Emma Segal
  2. Emma and Richard’s last Fresh Air show – and Richard’s first radio show for a year
  3. Vause actually made it – despite pulling god knows how many all nighters beforehand to get his dissertation done: LADGEND
  4. The first twist – all the guests were shocked to find they had to rate each others’ albums out of five so the winner could be crowned the Album Show’s Ultimate Guest of 2010/2011 and it got very competitive
  5. Ellie’s Special Fail – Ellie was the first guest to play a track from her chosen album and the Specials’ Enjoy Yourself only scored 18 out of 40 when her fellow guests rated it
  6. The guests kept coming – Cathy and Harry turned up and danced their way through the show
  7. The first ever vinyl track played on the Album Show – JY played Go Your Own Way from Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours and scored a massive rating of 34.5 out of 40
  8. The first time anyone ever swore on the Album Show – Fin began his live track by dropping the f-bomb
  9. The longest most epic rap ever on the Album Show – JP spat lyrics all over the studio for a mindblowing three minutes despite the neighbours complaining at his 1am rehearsals the night before
  10. Percy Pigs galore – Fin bought a ridiculous amount for the guests to tuck into
  11. First ever play of the Unicorns on the Album Show– Simon’s bizarre album choice was rated 25 out of 40
  12. Max Reinhardt’s ridiculous backwards rating system – “that was pretty funky: I’d give it, er, two out of five”
  13. The incredible #albumshow30 banner – it was huge and all the guests signed it
  14. The return of the bejewelled Album Show host t-shirts –and JP even ironed his
  15. First ever live jingle – the studio guests did some amazing barber shop quartet singing and the final result was a treat of a jingle
  16. First time ever Madonna was the Phenomenalbum – Vause guessed The Immaculate Collection, the legend
  17. First ever Album Show caption competition – courtesy of a hilarious Media Ball pic of JP & Fin
  18. Max brought back Weezer – Say It Ain’t So from The Blue Album got a rating of 26 out of 40
  19. Strategic Voting – Rate My Album soon descended into Eurovision tactics
  20. Pass the Parcel – Even though Simon didn’t know how to play, and JP blatantly rigged it, it was a success. From the forfeits we discovered JY will miss Vause’s elaborate collection of small American schoolboy outfits, his thighs and his DJ equipment the most. We also discovered Harriet would most like to sit in a dark room with Cathy and listen to an album ‘cos she’s the sexiest. And Simon chose to Snog Emma, Marry Vause and Avoid Charlie Sheen. They all won chocolate and Vause won a triple album of very odd songs very personal to Rich, eg, “Big Hunk of Love”.
  21. We were trending in Libya and Tunisia – possibly.
  22. Cathy and Harry describing Ace of Bass as “the Abba of the 20th century” – their album scored a competitive 34, just 0.5 behind JY’s Rumours
  23. The return of Wizard and Atrocious – As the guests rated each others’ albums, they scored marks for being those classic Album Show adages, “wizard” or “atrocious”
  24. The first surprise message – Ex-Head of Production at Fresh Air Dan Moss left a nice message from London to wish Emma and Rich all the best and congratulate them on their hard work at Fresh Air over the past four years.
  25. The second surprise message – Last year’s Station Manager Tim Burke, also in London, left a “This Is Your Life” message for the twosome to wish them well too. By now Emma was pretty much crying. Vause was pretty chuffed too.
  26. Emma’s funky album – Caribou’s Odessa from the album Swim was Segal’s choice and it scored 29.5
  27. The return of Chrimlach! – Yes, that’s right, we also got the show’s biggest fan from last year, Chris Imlach, to record a wistful piece for Emma and Rich and we just couldn’t stopped playing clips of it over Vause’s track...
  28. Vause’s EPIC winner – Well played Vause, with a cunning choice of Take That he overthrew JY with a rating of 36.5 to be the ALBUM SHOW’S ULTIMATE GUEST OF 2010/2011.
  29. Bookending with Bowie – The first track played of the Album Show in 2010/2011 was the first track from Fin’s favourite album, David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust, way back in September and Fin played us out with the last track from it. JP also opened #albumshow30 with a track from his fave album, Peter Gabriel’s OVO, a year after first playing it on Fresh Air.
  30. It was the best show we’ve ever done – by a long way. Thanks to all the Fresh Air legends, past, present and future, who made it all possible. As Vause said, VIVA FRESH AIR.

Off-season Specials 2011

JP VS Fin

May 30th 2011 The duo went head to head in a competitive podcast featuring the immortal feature "Geordie Shore Quiz - Just What Is A Slut Drop?" The podcast can be heard here

Summer Podcast

June 12th 2011 The Summer Special was back, this time with even more ludicrous sound effects and the duo allegedly travelling to their Jingle Cave in Sri Lanka. For Albums of the Summer, JP chose Bon Iver and Fin chose Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi. The podcast can be heard here

Season 6

Sundays at 12pm

In its longest series ever, the Album Show returned with its most spectacular and ambitious feature yet, as JP and Fin aimed to find the Greatest Album of the last two decades to celebrate 20 years of Fresh Air. Coincidentally, the much-talked about Mercury Music Prize is of the same age and so each week, at the end of the show, JP and Fin would each pull an album out a metaphorical hat and the two would go against each other the following week, the one with the most votes on the Album Show Facebook page winning. One album would be eliminated each week in the "Road to #ALBUMSHOW50".

The numbering of the album shows became confusing at the start of season six with many, including JP and Fin themeselves, wrongly not including the two off-season specials as had been done the year before. As a result #Albumshow31 was actually the 33rd episode and so on. This was not corrected until the end of the season, with #ALBUMSHOW40.

Episode 1

30th October 2011 For the first two weeks the feature would simply be previewed. For this episode, Fin was away so Jodie Young stepped in to run through the ten most recent Mercury Prize winners. The podcast can be heard here (inaccurately titled "Album Show 31"; it is, in fact, "Album Show 33", see above.)

Episode 2

6th November 2011 Fin was back as the duo ran through the ten oldest Mercury Prize winners from the nineties and early 2000s. The podcast can be heard here (inaccurately titled "Album Show 32"; it is, in fact, "Album Show 34", see above.)

Episode 3

13th November 2011 The "Greatest Albums" competition commenced with a fierce contest between Speech Debelle and Franz Ferdinand. Franz prevailed despite Speech Debelle herself retweeting the Album Show an astonishing five times. Elyse Jameson was the guest this week.

Greatest Albums Week 1
Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand 18 – 3 Speech Debelle - Speech Therapy Fin beats JP

Episode 4

20th November 2011 This week the tension in the studio got hotter than ever as Pulp went up against The XX. Jodie Young and HP Neilson were the guests.

Greatest Albums Week 2
Pulp - Different Class 17 – 11 The XX - The XX Fin beats JP

Episode 5: Voting Scandal

27th November 2011 In the biggest Album Show controversy ever, JP's album won by one vote but some votes did not come through until after the show and the decision was reversed in favour of Fin's album. The global reaction to the news can be heard here

Greatest Albums Week 3
Gomez - Bring It On 10 - 9 Antony and the Johnsons - I Am A Bird Now Fin beats JP

Episode 6

4th December 2011 The day after the Fresh Air Naked Banner where JP and Fin froze their proverbial socks off, it was back to Album Show action. Brian Pokora was the guest this week and played "Neutral Milk Hotel - In The Aeroplane Over The Sea". The show had a dramatic introduction referencing the controversial events of the previous week, which can be heard here

Greatest Albums Week 4
Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not 18 - 8 Primal Scream - Screamadelica JP beats Fin

Episode 8: #ALBUMSHOW40

18th December 2011 The fourtieth episode of and the first ever eighth episode of an Album Show series saw a Christmas special with Angus Niven, Ellie Robert and Jodie Young. Angus played several Christmas songs and in what was dubbed "the battle of the lightweights", Roni Size/Reprazent took on Talvin Singh. This show saw the premier of no less than FOUR new "Greatest Albums" jingles, which can be heard here, here, here, and here.
