Basic Formatting

From FreshAir Wiki
Jump to: navigation, search

This is a basic summary of the most useful aspects of wiki editing. The key is not to use html when it isn't appropriate, but instead stick to the same formatting principles of wikipedia, as this will mean pages are formatted the same throughout the site. Though it may appear complex at first, it really is quite simple so don't feel threatened and give it a go!

Titles & Hierarchy

You can make sections using equal signs. For example, this section is created with:

== Titles & Hierarchy ==

You can make sections within sections by adding an extra equal sign such as

== Level 2 ==
=== Level 3 ===
==== Level 4 ====
===== Level 5 =====

Notice that sections begin with level 2, with 2 equal signs, as the single equal sign is equivalent to level one, i.e. the page title.

Text

Italics
 ''Italics''
Bold
 ''Bold''
Bold & Italic
 '''''Bold & Italic'''''

Lists can be made using a star and a hash, to create either numbered or unnumbered lists. So

Shopping List
  • Eggs
  • Bacon
  • Milk
'''Shopping List'''
* Eggs
* Bacon
* Milk
Things to do
  1. Buy Eggs
  2. Buy Bacon
  3. Milk Cow
 '''Things to do'''
# Buy Eggs
# Buy Bacon
# Milk Cow

Links

Wiki Pages

Within any page you can link to another page within the wiki, even if that page doesn't exist. To do this you open a double square bracket with the name of the page, and then close it - simples.

If you wanted to, you can also link to a wiki page, but have the website print something different. You do this with a 'pipe'; so this next page will link to the Committee page, but print bunch of arseholes.

[[Committee| bunch of arseholes]]

Links Outside of the Wiki

The principle is very similar - but you use single brackets. However, to make it print something else, you just leave a space and then write whatever you need - as in this link for Fresh Air.

Categories

A really important and powerful feature of any wiki is it's ability to organise itself, and thus make content easier to find. Thus, this page has been tagged with the help category, meaning that it is located on the category page for all help pages. To do this, all you need do is at the top of your page add a double square bracket with the category name and then close it. The wiki will automatically format it, and add it to the register.

[[Category:Name of Category]]

Some category types you might want to use

  • Typical Categories:

Shows, Radio, Society, Music Team, Station

  • Special:

Contributor Request adds the page to a category specifically asking for people to contribute to that page.
