History

Though details are scarce, rumour has it that the organisation was given its name after a particular brand of beer, while then station manager JP, drunk it.

Several months later the team were then assembled by a document later referred to as the 'call to arms'.

Rise of the Cobras

In Autumn 2011, excitement was rife at the prospect of a Fresh Air American Football team, particularly one with a name as rad as "The Cobras". Membership grew and grew on Facebook until Max Reinhardt gave the people what they had been waiting for with the Call to Arms.

Call To Arms

The Fresh Air Cobras transform the hallowed Meadows turf into gridiron, gathering once a week to play some American football
Day: Sundays
Meet: main intersection of Middle Meadow Walk at the top of the Meadows
Time: 1:30 pm
From simply throwing around the pigskin to full-on touch scrimmages, there are gameplans in place no matter how many people turn up. :Ultimately though we want to have ourselves a ballgame!
Whether you are the next Aaron Rodgers or you don't even know who that is, we welcome all skill levels.
LET'S GO!

Early Days

In the early winter months of 2011, attendance had grown every week as the Meadows were dominated by this year's fast-learning Cobras. The first two sessions were the day after Naked Banners and so did not get the attendance seen in later weeks.

The beggining of 2012 heralded great things for the Cobra organisation. With spirit invigorated by the concurrent NFL playoffs, numbers grew, with some very talented rookies making their way onto the team. Due to the lack of David Mackay, the Nobras made few appearances early in 2012, but they were replaced by the ascention of a new team in the Brobras. Generally consisting of the Scott Goodhill Gang, the Brobras have much less heart and tact than the Nobras, and partake in typical bro-like behaviour.

The addition of a simple offensive playbook created by Brian Pokora, proved to be very successful at running quicker and better-executed plays (despite ridicule from the Brobras).

Nobra controversy

As described above, any team containing Dave MacKay is automatically the Nobras and are a team most Cobras love to hate. Dave insists to this day that he is captain of the Nobras, but he is, in fact, just the defining chracteristic of the Nobra team.

Hobra controversy

Apparently bitches ain't shit but tricks and hoes.

Possible Cobra Radio Show

In 2012 it is likely that a Sunday night Cobra football show will take place on Scotland's Best Radio Station, FreshAir.org.uk. Magnus Monahan proposed " The Freshair Cobras HUB show. Sponsored by Cobra beer, theme tune by Cobra Starship. Features including Cobra Vs Nobra and most venomous play of the week."

Recaps and Results

December 11th 2011

This was a particularly exciting session as the Nobras (any team containing Dave MacKay is automatically the Nobras) beat the Cobras 28-21, overcoming a 14-21 deficit. It was the biggest turnout yet, with 5 vs. 5. However, there were almost as many interceptions as completed passes. Scott Goodhill was particularly silly on this day and seemed not to understand the rules.

  • Best ridiculous formation: 'The Conga'
  • Best catch: JP's fumbled-around-the-back-threw-the-legs (despite Goodhill being offside)
  • Most shameful tackle: Goodhill decking a defenseless Robert

December 18th 2011

The last training before christmas was icy and slippy like a bastard christmas goose. The cobras thrashed the Nobras despite having a 4-3 man advantage much of the time and despite Dave's new Nobra song (which comprised spelling the word NOBRA repeatedly). The Nobras did, however, invent a new play called the Ben and Jerry's which involved scooping the ice cream. Dave described the play as "rather vanilla" and in a knee-jerk reaction the Nobras got serious and scored a Phish Food down in the very next play.

  • Best ridiculous formation: 'The Higgs Boson'
  • Best catch: Kelsey's faceball was nearly so good, but sadly not to be
  • Most shameful tackle: JP took up the mantle in Goodhill's absense and floored Kelsey

January 1st 2012

The first day of 2012 was a momentous one as it saw the Cobras play and win their first competitive match. The Cobra line up of Monahan, Goodhill and Aaron Rohan took on "Wank Chariot" a team including a Stirling University Quarterback, a Scottish International (touch rugby) player and local pantomime villain Innes Murray. The Cobras came out 21-14 winners in an enthralling encounter that will go down in Cobra history.

  • Best ridiculous formation: The NYE hangover buster
  • Best catch: Monahan's behind the head interception from between two opponents.
  • Most shameful tackle: Murray on Monahan, when blood was drawn from the face.

January 22nd 2012

Final score: Cobras 30 - 21 Nobras
Cobras: Ursula (C), JY, Nick, Tim, Jalen, Colin, Dash
Nobras: Kelsey (C), Olivia, Jordan, Brian, Max, Magnus and Dave
Floater on offence: JP
MVP: JY - many interceptions and crucial 3rd down catches.

On a cold, beautiful afternoon on the frost-covered Meadows, the largest scrimmage yet had taken place between the Cobras and the Nobras, with many rookie players. The new additions did not disappoint, flexing their skills early and often to take an early 14-0 lead. A Tebow-inspired scramble resulted in an 80-yard TD pass from Max to Magnus to tie it at 14 all. The game remained a stalemate with each defence coming up big, but the Cobras were too strong on the day, sealing the win by scoring 16 unanswered points (including a safety).
