Committee
Fresh Air is organised by an elected committee. The roles and names of the positions within this committee change each year, decided by the manager. The transformation of these committee roles is outlined below.
Elections
The Committee is elected once a year, usually during the third semester of the University year by members of Fresh Air. In advance of these elections, those who are hoping to run for a position are given a chance. Anyone can stand for a committee position, though there are exceptions. In order to stand, by protocol, a members must be nominated by a member, and then seconded by another member at the election meeting. This nominated individual then stands in front of the assembled crowd alongside other hopefuls, and each are given two minutes to explain what they would do in their role, and elaborate on information provided previously to the membership in their manifesto. After all the possible candidates have had a chance to speak, the election is then opened to questions from the floor. Once the curiosity of voters has been satisfied, or the questions have taken too long, the possible members are lead into a separate room, and then the membership is given a chance to vote by raising their hands. Hands are counted and if there is a clear winner, they are announced as the candidates are brought into the room.
Here are the manifestos for the 2012/13 committee elections.
Exceptions
There are a couple of exceptions to the idea that any member can stand for any position: either they must have served in the committee before, as in the case of the manager, or the role they are applying for requires a technical knowledge or other expertise, and so they are appointed - as is the case for many of the design and technical roles at the station. As well as this, the manager, assistant manager and the secretary must all be current students at the University, and in the case of the former, these roles are elected in advance of the other roles in order for 'reorganisation' to take place.
Committee Meetings
Committee Meetings are when the Committee meet up, usually before the weekly meeting, to discuss pertinent issues, and are generally quite 'banterous', if not border line offensive. Attendance is manditory for all committee members, but apologies can be given in advance if attendance is not for whatever reason, not possible. The committee meetings are also open to other members of the society. Important motions must be voted on by the committee
Roles
Manager
I’ll be running the ship this year, heading up the committee and making sure everyone in the station has a voice. Come find me at our weekly meetings, I’d love to talk to all our members, new and old, about how you’d like to get involved in the station this year.
Assistant Manager
Managing a radio station is undoubtedly a huge task and not one that can be done alone. There are a ridiculous number of things to remember, to co ordinate and to 'execute'. So, as assistant manager, I do just that; I assist JP in managing and running the station in whatever way is required. Ultimately, the assistant manager is here to help with any suggestions, problems or questions that fresh air's members might have. The Assistant Manager is at all the meetings, or can be contacted by e-mail.
Secretary
The secretary is responsible for signing up new members and maintaining this database. The Secretary is also responsible for taking minutes at committee meetings and sending out the 'weekly dose of joy that is the members' email'. This drops into your inbox at the start of every week with news of opportunities, meetings and Events for the coming days. It is the secretary's job to provide a warm welcome to new members, so if you have any questions or aren't sure where to go with a query/request/idea, the secretary is probably a good place to start.
Treasurer
The treasurer deals with all the money - to account for this money, where it comes from, and what happens to it. As well as this, the treasurer should make sure the society spend wisely, deals with any requests from within the membership, and applying for funding from [EUSA].
Head of Programming
The Head of Programming works out who gets what show and at what time. To do this, the head of programming must distribute and collect show application forms, spend time listening to all application demos and then sort out these shows into a coherent schedule based on various criteria such as availability and show type. It is the head of programming's responsibility to provide members with a clear idea of what should be in a demo CD, and advise on general show content and style.
Head of Development and Training
The role of Head of Development and Training is to coordinate the studio training of all members. If you want to present or produce a show, you must be trained in our studio by a member of the committee. Even if you have radio experience or are very technically savvy, you won’t be familiar with our exact set-up, and training is also an opportunity to pick up some tips on what we define as good presenting. The development side of the role also entails helping members with an interest in doing radio as a career to get advice and training to do so. The role can also involve booking guest speakers for meetings and other indispensable sessions - so do keep an eye on the members’ email so you know what’s coming up.
Head of Development and Training must be at least proficient in the art of rap!
Head of Clubs and Events
Responsible for arranging FreshAir.org.uk’s spectacular programme of events and maintaining good relations with the different club nights and venues in Edinburgh. Normally Fresh Air is puts on a few gigs in any given year, a couple of really big club nights, and some smaller, more regular nights. These events are run by the events team.
Social Secretary
As well as being a radio station, Fresh Air is primarily a student society - and the Social Secretary is in charge of social events planned throughout the year, including pub crawls and mad nights out. As part of this, the Social Secretary must maintain events for all tastes to keep the station so famously sociable.
Head of Music
The Head of Music coordinates the FreshAir.org.uk Music Team. The main aim of the music team is to maintain the station's playlist, discover new and exciting music, and make sure the rest of the station knows about it. The music team meets once a week to listen to what various record labels have sent to Fresh Air; we get sent many CDs by companies wanting feedback from students so that record labels can assess what we're into. As a result, we get a lot of current releases with a reaction sheet that need to be filled in and returned. The Head of Music must also liase with promo companies to organise free gig tickets and interviews with artists. Aside from this, the Music Team organises our recommendations for the national [Student Radio Chart Show], and host the chart show from our own studio a couple of times per year. Come broadcast time, the music team puts together its own Music Team Show - creating the content, presenting, playlisting and producing the show.
Must be at least in some way reminiscent of a beaver.
Head of News
The Head of News is in charge of the News Team, coordinating the news content for Fresh Air. They must organise weekly meetings and the weekly News Team Show, and together we create informative and interesting reporting on issues relevant to our predominantly student listenership. This role also involves a degree of teaching the team to learn how to use the recording and edit radio friendly news packages. During the broadcast the News Team is involved with brain-storming feature ideas, investigating interesting stories, conducting interviews, editing and producing news reports and news-reading.
Head of Creative Arts
The primary role of the Head of Creative Arts is to co-ordinate the Arts Team. The Arts Team are responsible for reviewing theatre, art and film events in Edinburgh, as well as organising the Arts Team Show and also co-ordinating original arts content such as radio dramas.
Advertising and Fundraising
Usual two people, this small team are responsible for funding the station outside of donations from its membership. Unlike most other student stations, we do not receive funding from the University, so it is entirely up to us to raise the thousands Fresh Air needs each year through advertising and traditional fundraising. Also, Heads of Advertising and Fundraising lead a team responsible for coming up with great ideas for moneymaking stunts and running them successfully. For example, every Christmas we hold our Naked Banner singing Christmas carols on Princes Street, as well as many other varied fundraising ventures.
Head of On Air
The Head of On Air is responsible for creating a joined-together, unified broadcast - working closely with the shows and a team of producers. Through these producers, FreshAir.org.uk’s shows can be given guidance on content and can work towards a station goal – in a similar way to the operations of professional radio stations. The Head of On Air is also a point of contact for all of the station teams (Music, Arts, News, etc.) and the committee to filter station messages and great content through to on-air. So, for example, if Fresh Air is putting on a gig, the on air production team maximise on-air impact. Similarly, if a show has created some great content we cross-promote it with similar shows.
Head of Off Air
The Head of Off Air plays an important part in the identity and quality of the station’s broadcast. All non-live audio comes through this role; so they are in charge of all the station’s jingles, adverts and also control the station’s pre-recorded shows and features. They also run our second studio, Studio 2, in the [Pleasance] to allow people time to pre-record audio, practise skills and content, and make the station sound super-slick.
Head of Marketing and Branding
The Head of Marketing and Branding is in charge of the station’s image. All printed and promotional materials are worked on by me (and brought to life by the Head of Design) to maximise FreshAir.org.uk’s impact. and sell the station to the people of Edinburgh and through this maximise listeners. The includes organising the society's members to publicise the station, its shows and events well. Everyone who would like a show MUST do his or her bit with regards to publicity. The better the publicity, the better the events, the better the reputation, the more people listen to shows, the greater the income, the better the broadcast and so on. Publicity is one of the most important parts of FreshAir.org.uk and it is imperative that everyone does as much as they can from handing out the odd flyer after a lecture, to coming along to our chalking events where we chalk the town red (or other colours) with FreshAir.org.uk scribbles!
Head of Design
The Head of Design is responsible for the look and feel of the station’s printed material, merchandise and website, including posters, leaflets, membership cards, t-shirts and badges, all designed to ensure that the branding of the station is consistent and effective as well as attractive.
Head of Technical
The Head of Technical has the enviable task of getting the studios in shape when things go wrong and of looking out for new additions to the studio, providing technical support needed for the society to function via the maintenance of the desk and equipment in the studio. So don’t be alarmed if you find me crawling under the desk now and again!
Webmaster
The webmaster designs and edits the website, deals with mailing lists and other online facets of the station - including this very wiki.
